Airways Corporation and TracPlus Global have today announced an initiative for owners of New Zealand registered aircraft to receive subsidized subscriptions for new satellite tracking devices.
TracPlus uses GPS positions transmitted via the Iridium satellite network to create a track of an aircraft’s flight, which can be viewed over the Internet. The flight can be followed in near real-time and ensures the location and status of an aircraft is known at all times.

The importance of such technology as a complement to Emergency Locator Transmitters (ELTs) was again highlighted last week during the Coroners Inquest into the fatal crash of Michael Erceg and Guustaaf Klatte in November 2005.
At the time of the Erceg crash and the extensive search that followed, such flight tracking was an emerging technology that had yet to be proven. In the last five years, the technology has matured to the point where New Zealand tracking companies are amongst the world leaders in its use to enhance aviation safety.

“This is all about safety.” says Airways ANS Programmes Manager, Rob Irwin. “As flight tracking technology continues to improve and mature, there has been some resistance amongst pilots who see new products becoming available and want to be sure that they are buying the latest equipment. It is important that our customers can benefit from the most up to date tracking equipment, and our agreement with TracPlus achieves that.”

At the same time, TracPlus Global has announced that it is shipping its latest handheld Iridium global tracking and messaging device, the SHOUT.

“The SHOUT is the smallest and lightest portable Iridium tracking device available,” said Mike Hanning, VP Sales and Marketing of TracPlus Global “and with two way global text messaging and an internal battery as standard, this is a very attractive option for those pilots who have been concerned about buying outdated technology.”

The offer will enable owners of ZK-registered aircraft to purchase a TracPlus portable SHOUT satellite tracking and messaging device for only US$1295 (plus GST). Airways will support the purchase by way of contributing USD$19.95 towards each months subscription costs. The Airways subsidy can be applied to any other new TracPlus terminal as well as the SHOUT.
