Aviation NZ Heads UpAviation NZ Sector Champions and Supporters Update: September 2009Greetings all! This monthly email goes to Sector champions, Supporters of Aviation NZ and companies registered on the website. It updates you on happenings at Aviation New Zealand. You are welcome to comment about anything in this update. As always, you can pass on this update to other aviation companies. QUICK HEADS UPActivities you should be aware of:
More MRO progress An email was sent during the month to the MRO companies that participated in the June workshop, or which expressed interest in the project – but not to the component suppliers. The email aims to get an understanding of some of the component/system/assembly work sent overseas but which MROs believe could or should be done in NZ. Information was also sought on the systems or processes that would be required to undertake this work, with guidance on the regulatory expectations of potential suppliers (OEM approved, FAA or EASA certified, NZCAA Part 148, non-certified vendor) and any special equipment requirements e.g. hydraulics and test rigs. Some interesting suggestions are coming forward already. I’ll be following up with all other recipients of this email. If you haven’t contributed, would like to, or are keen to learn more, let me know. New Aviation/MRO/Manufacturing capabilities continue to develop. Over the last month, profiles have been added to the website for Air Hawkes Bay (pilot training), Altitude Aerospace Interiors (customer specific interior design solutions), Connections Technologies (avionics), and Shearwater (new amphibian aircraft design). The profile for Aviation Enterprises (AEL Engineering) in Christchurch was amended. This company has secured AS9100 and ISO 9001:2008 certification from Bureau Veritas for aircraft parts – manufacture, supply and maintenance. The AS9100 certification in particular is a significant achievement. Check out the profiles on the website to see what is possible with these and other companies. Go to: http://www.aviationnz.co.nz/Services.aspx and use the index. If you would like to change your entry, please send me an update. If, for some reason, you haven’t completed a profile, go to http://www.aviationnz.co.nz/Register.aspx and do it! Subsequent eLetters will list new and updated profiles. Printing Full Capability Profiles from the website now possible. Just a reminder - a printer friendly facility has been added to company profiles on the website to make it much easier to print the full profile. NZ Government Procurement Review and Defence Review 2009. A joint Aviation Industry Association and Aviation NZ submission for the Government Procurement Review was submitted to the Ministry of Economic Development. It included suggestions on companies that could be talked to for further information. Thanks for the comments and suggestions a number of you made, either at the MRO workshop or to the AIA/Aviation NZ direct. They were incorporated in the submission. We have also passed these comments to the Defence Industry Association which is involved in the Defence Review 2009. Irene King and I will be meeting one of the Defence review teams in the next week to go over the various points in the Procurement Review but which are very relevant to the Defence Review – basically using procurement to help develop the capabilities of New Zealand companies, introduce new technologies to the country and help make New Zealand companies more internationally competitive. Aviation New Zealand missions to India 2 to 6 November 2009. This has been confirmed and I’m now in contact with the participants. There has been good uptake on this possibility. NZ Stand at Singapore Air Show, 2 to 7 February 2010. This has been confirmed and stand design is starting. I will be in regular dialogue with the exhibitors. If you intend being in Singapore for the show, and would like to be incorporated in New Zealand events but haven’t let me know you’ll be there, please do. American Association of Airport Executives (AAAE) to hold conference in Queenstown. The World’s largest professional organisation for airport executives with over 5000 members is to meet in Queenstown from 15 to 17 February 2010. Aviation NZ is working with Queenstown Airport and Airports New Zealand to run the conference and an associated trade display. Further information will be provided as the program develops. More info on AAAE is available www.aaae.org If you’d like to be involved, please let me know. I intend giving relevant companies more information as September progresses. Aviation Safety Services Symposium to be held in Queenstown, February 2010. This symposium is deliberating coinciding with the AAAE conference. While the messages of the Symposium are very important, holding two aviation conferences at the same time in Queenstown should also help generate more awareness and publicity of the growth potential of the aviation industry. Further information will be available through the AIA. More resources at Aviation NZ. Ian Stockwell from NZTE joins Aviation NZ on secondment next week. Many of you will know Ian well. He brings tremendous international knowledge, as well as a thorough understanding of the training industry, to Aviation NZ. Aviation New Zealand champions the international development of New Zealand's aviation exports, encourages the development of scale through collaboration, and connects international customers with appropriate solutions developed in New Zealand. www.aviationnz.co.nz IN CONCLUSIONAviation NZ is encouraging companies to become financial supporters.
