John Fogden to leave CAA

A message from John Lanham GM General Aviation

Foggy joined CAA in November 1997 as one of the new CAA Field Safety Advisers and guided northern aviators through the turbulent period of the late nineties. After a little arm twisting he was persuaded to leave his lifestyle block in Auckland in July 2002 to replace Andy Redfern as the second Manager Rotary Wing and Agricultural Operations in the then still relatively new GA Group.

Since then he has been extremely active and innovative in the surveillance and guidance of general aviation and his operational sectors in particular. His projects and achievements in the period include recertification of the RW and Ag sectors under the ‘new’ Rules; successful oversight of Part 135, 137 and 141 operations; work on LIB4 with respect to definition of passengers and crew and in particular with respect to Wild Animal Recovery Ops (WARO);  the Part 137 PWG and rule re-write; the Agricultural Aircraft Safety Review; acting as point of contact for MAF advisors to the Minister; the Part 137 AC ‘Operations above MCTOW’ (project manager); helicopter Night Vision Imaging Systems introduction and management; the hospital helipads safety issue; Air Ambulance Industry Standards; participation on the Search & Rescue Consultative Committee; participation in SAR workshops with RCCNZ; maintaining cordial relationships with AIA/AAA and the Helicopter Association (against the odds!); and managing his very busy unit across two sectors of GA. A significant body of accomplishment.

I am pleased to say he will be with us as MRWA until 9 April 2010 and we may not lose contact with him entirely after that. There will be opportunities to wish him well in this new direction nearer the time, I am sure.
