CEO Update

getimage911195

Surprise!  We thought we’d keep you guessing by sending out the newsletter early this week.  Reason being, I am off to Australia on Friday to speak at Rotortech, the annual conference for the newly resurrected Australian Helicopter Industry Association.

The Aus HIA is keen to hear about our successful Av NZ Helicopter Division and in particular our collaborative relationship with CAA.  A very different picture to that in Australia currently.  In fact, the relationship with our CAA is so good that they freely shared with us their helicopter accident data, so industry can help improve our safety record – a win/win for everyone.

At the same time I’ll be telling them about the new Av NZ, our one industry strategy, and encouraging participation in our Aviation Leadership Summit.  Hopefully we’ll get a Bell 505 over too!

Did you know that NZ has the highest per capita rate of helicopters in the world?

On the subject of the Summit, half the exhibition stands are sold and we have 50+ delegates registered so far.  Pretty good going for two months out.  Don’t leave it to the last minute or you may miss out.

Gidday cobbers, until next week.

NTSB special investigation into agricultural aircraft operations

The National Transportation Safety Board has released the findings of its Special Investigation Report on the safety of agricultural aircraft operations.  The NTSB research looked at 78 accidents that occurred during the 2013 aerial flying season and found that agricultural flying ranks seventh in hours flown but third in total annual accidents where collisions with obstacles are a prevailing concern. The report also includes eight safety recommendations to the FAA and the National Agricultural Aviation Research & Education Foundation, urging the two organisations to develop and distribute agricultural operations-specific guidance on fatigue and risk management, aircraft maintenance and pilot knowledge and skills tests.   A new Safety Alert, “Preventing Obstacle Collision Accidents in Agricultural Aviation,” was also issued.
