On 12th August 2010 the NZCAA held an IAG meeting at Wellington Airport to review Unmanned Aerial Systems which they perceive as being an urgent and substantial project. John Lanham, Rex Kenny and Chris Lamain were all in attendance

The meeting was attended by Designers, Manufacturers, Operators and Military (RNZAF, Army & RNZN). Approximately 40 people were in attendance.

Interest from those assembled was very high on there being a UAS division of the AIA as the development of an AC would require a certain amount of specialist knowledge in the area of rules making.

A paper was presented to the AIA Council and the decision was made to create a UAS division under the umbrella of the Air Transport Division.
