Construction Work at Mechanics Bay

The Marine Rescue Centre have contracted a construction company to make repairs to the eastern seawall in Mechanics Bay. This involves placing of approximately 30m3 of basalt rock on the outside and inside of the seawall, due to the narrow construction of the seawall it is impossible to drive land based equipment on the seawall meaning that this work must be done from a barge.

The construction company are to use the spudded barge Mesenge (see attached photo) to undertake this work which due to its size this may have an effect on the operations of the heliport. The barge measures 19.5m wide and 35m long and it hasthe top of these spud legs will be approximately 15m above the rock seawall when the rock is being placed by the excavator. two spud legs (long vertical tubes that sit on the seabed to hold the barge in position)

The barge will be position on the outer side of the most eastern seawall from 0830 on Friday 16th April (high tide) until approx 1630, at which time the barge will be removed to another location.

Please be aware of this when landing or taking off from Mechanics Bay during this time.
