Air Vice-Marshal Peter Stockwell, Chief of Air Force
Air Vice-Marshal Stockwell enlisted into the Royal New Zealand Air Force in January 1973 as a Navigator under training.  On completion of Navigator training Air Vice-Marshal Stockwell was posted to No.1 Squadron flying B170 Bristol Freighters.
He was promoted to the rank of Flying Officer in December 1974 and to Flight Lieutenant in December 1977.  Prior to completing the RNZAF Junior Staff Course in May 1980, Air Vice-Marshal Stockwell held flying posts at No. 41 Squadron (B170) based in Singapore and No. 40 Squadron (C-130 Hercules) based in Auckland.
Following a tour as Directing Staff at the Command Training Squadron at Wigram, Air Vice-Marshal Stockwell qualified as a Navigation Instructor and spent time instructing at the Navigation and Air Electronics Training Squadron on F27 Friendships.  He then returned to No. 40 Squadron (C-130 and B727) as the Navigator Leader and was promoted to the rank of Squadron Leader in July 1985.
In 1989, Air Vice-Marshal Stockwell attended the year long RAF Advanced Staff Course at Bracknell in the UK, before returning to Wellington as the Personal Staff Officer to the Chief of Air Staff. 

On promotion to the rank of Wing Commander in August 1990, Air Vice-Marshal Stockwell was appointed Director of Air Staff Policy and Plans.  In July 1992 he completed the Australian Defence Force Joint Services Staff Course in Canberra before returning to Air Staff in December 1992.
In April 1993 he was posted to Auckland as Commanding Officer No. 40 Squadron. 
After two years at No. 40 Squadron Air Vice-Marshal Stockwell was posted to Officer Commanding Operations Wing RNZAF Base Auckland.
In 1995, Air Vice-Marshal Stockwell was awarded the Air Force Cross for his leadership of No. 40 Squadron.  He was awarded the New Zealand Armed Forces Award on 9 January 1988 and clasp on 9 January 2003. 
In August 1996, Air Vice-Marshal Stockwell was promoted to the rank of Group Captain and posted to Canada as the NZ Defence Advisor.  He was appointed Base Commander, RNZAF Base Woodbourne in January 2000. In January 2001 he was appointed Director of Air Force Training under Project Refocus.
Air Vice-Marshal Stockwell deployed to Tampa, Florida, in May 2003 as the NZDF Senior National Representative at HQ USCENTCOM.  Air Vice-Marshal Stockwell returned to Woodbourne on 4 November 2003. He was promoted to his current rank and appointed to the position of Commander Joint Forces New Zealand on 1 May 2009. 
On 1 May 2011, Air Vice-Marshal Stockwell was appointed to his current post of Chief of Air Force. He is married to Alison and they have two children, Samantha and Mathew.

Adam leads NZTE’s Specialised Manufacturing team and is responsible for NZTE’s work with businesses in the wider manufacturing, building and materials sectors.
 
Since joining NZTE in 2006, Adam has held a number of roles including Operations Manager Specialised Manufacturing,  Manager Regional Development and Manager Innovation Infrastructure. In 2007 he led the government’s study of Finland, Italy, UK and Spain’s innovation parks and business incubators.
 
Originally from the UK, Adam has worked with many multinationals and global names including Group Lotus, Bentley Racing, Silverstone Circuit, Baxter Healthcare, Danepak and Volkswagen Audi Group. His background in both engineering and central government spans the UK, New Zealand and the wider EU.
 
His time in the UK and EU has also included stints with the European Commission in Brussels, United Kingdom Trade and Investment and a variety of economic development and innovation projects across the UK and Europe.
 
Adam is interested in all aspects of innovation in engineering and particularly the convergence of materials expertise in added value manufacturing. He holds degrees in mathematics, statistics and economics and postgraduate qualifications in management and innovation.

Kevin Short


Air Commodore Kevin Short (Alternate)


Air Commodore Kevin Short currently serves as the Deputy Chief of Air Force.

Throughout his early career Air Commodore Short was mainly employed on No. 5 Squadron, completing duties as a Navigator, Tactical Coordinator, and aircraft Captain.  He has accumulated over 5 000 flying hours primarily on the Orion aircraft.  While on No. 5 Squadron he held the positions of Navigator Leader, Deployment Commander, and Operations Flight Commander.

Air Commodore Short has attended several professional military courses.  In August 1987 he attended the year- long General Duties Aero Systems Course at Royal Air Force Cranwell.  In June 1991 Air Commodore Short attended No. 32 Staff Course at RNZAF Command and Staff College, and in mid-1999 completed the year- long USAF Air War College in Alabama, USA.
At a senior level Air Commodore Short has been employed in project, plans and development related appointments.  These included Operational Requirements (Air Staff), Deputy Director Command and Control Information Systems (JCIS) at the start of Project Fusion, Director of Air Force Plans and Development (Air Staff), and Assistant Chief of Air Staff Development.  In this latter position he initiated several major projects including the Hercules and Orion upgrades, and the purchase of the B757.
More recently Air Commodore Short has filled a number of command and representational appointments.  In early 2002, for a period of six months, he served as the NZDF Senior National Officer in USCENTCOM as part of OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM (OEF), at the representational rank of Air Commodore.  In December 2003 he took up the position of Officer Commanding No. 485 Wing, RNZAF Base Auckland.  This position was responsible for the command, conduct, supervision and management of RNZAF Operational Force Elements; including operational capability management, and RNZAF flight safety.  In July 2006 he served as Senior National Officer and Commander of the NZ Provincial Reconstruction Team (Rotation 9), Bamyan, Afghanistan.
In June 2007 he took up the post of Assistant Chief Development (AC Dev) in HQ NZDF, and promoted to the rank of Air Commodore.  He was responsible for the NZDF Long Term Development Planning mechanisms, including Business Case Development for Major Capital Projects.  In December 2009 Air Commodore Short was posted to Assistant Chief Strategic Commitments and Intelligence (AC SCI).  This position was responsible for: the strategic planning and monitoring of NZDF Operations; advice to CDF and the Government in respect to operations; the Mutual Assistance Programme; support to Defence Attaches/Advisors; the provision of military intelligence; and for advice on security matters.  In June 2011 Air Commodore Short took up his current post of Deputy Chief of Air Force (DCAF).
Air Commodore Short is a keen golfer, keeps fit, and also enjoys being the home handyman.  He is married to Sherryll and has two adult children; Matthew and Stephanie (both working in Wellington).

Is a Hamilton-based New Zealand Trade and Enterprise (NZTE) Sector Manager with special responsibility for the General Aviation Industry.  New Zealand Trade and Enterprise is the New Zealand Government’s economic development agency.
Prior to joining NZTE, Mr Smyth worked in the aviation industry.  He also has recent international commercialisation experience.   He is an experienced Director and member of the NZ Institute of Directors.  Additionally, Mr Smyth trained as a professional engineer and was awarded the 1995 ECNZ Rutherford Award.
